Is there sufficient sodium bicarbonate in an effervescent tablet?
The higher the percentage of sodium bicarbonate in an effervescent tablet, the tastier the tablet.
1.0g Redoxon tablet
1.0g ENO fruit salt
4 100ml beaker
1 measuring cylinder
1 electronic balance
Measure 1.0g of Redoxon tablet on an electronic balance.
³ of water in a measuring cylinder.
Pour the 15.0cm
³ of water into a 100ml beaker.
Using the formula: Mass of water = Density x Volume, the mass of water is 15.0g.
Calculate the initial mass of tablet and water.
Add the tablet into the beaker and stir until the tablet dissolves.
Measure the final mass of solution.
The loss of mass is the mass of the carbon dioxide, given the equation:
2NaHCO3 (aq) + C6H8O6 (aq)
Na2C6H6O6 (aq) + 2H2O (l) + 2CO2 (g)
9. Using the formula Mass of CO2 = Mole of CO2 x Molecular Mass, calculate the number of mole of CO2.
10. Using the Mole ratio concept, calculate the mass of NaHCO3 in the tablet and find the percentage of NaHCO3 in the solution.
11. Repeat steps 1-10 for ENO fruit salt.
12. Record all data in a table.
Table of results:
ENO fruit salt
Mass of tablet / g
Mass of water / g
Total inital mass / g
Final mass after reaction / g
Loss in mass / g
Mass of NaHCO3 / g
Percentage of NaHCO3 in tablet / %
Limitations of experiment:
Time given for all the carbon dioxide gas to escape is too short. Mass of final solution might be lower than expected.
Surface area of Redoxon and ENO fruit salt is different, and surface area might affect the results of the reaction.
Mass of carbon dioxide is too minute to obtain an accurate reading.
Sodium bicarbonate enhances the taste of food products. Therefore, it answers the question to why ENO tastes better than Redoxon.
Many people find that ENO fruit salt is tastier than Redoxon as there is 26.3% of sodium bicarbonate in ENO fruit salt as compared to 11.9% of sodium bicarbonate in Redoxon.
I recommend a new Vitamin product that has 30%-35% of sodium bicarbonate.
Too much sodium bicarbonate causes the Vitamin C drink to be too gasy and acidic, while too little causes it to be bland.
Thus, the pros and cons have to be taken into consideration. Health effects have to be taken into consideration as well as Vitamin C is supposed to be food addictive that protects the body against oxidative stress and is a cofactor in several vital enzymatic reactions.
